Caribbean Economy

The Caribbean economy depends largesly on the agriculture and tourism industries. Some islands have mineral resources capable of being exploited and many have tried to encourage the industrial sector and manufacturing, with mixed results. Average income varies greatly from island to island. By 2005 The Bahamas had the highest annual per capita income in the region, $19,139, largely a result of tourism, which attracted 1.5 million visitors in 2003. In Barbados per capita income was $17,170; and in Trinidad and Tobago, $13,958. Haiti has the region’s lowest per capita income, $1,614 annually.
