Bears are among the largest carnivores,
characterized by stocky bodies, short tails, long, square snouts,
and round ears. North American bears are common to wooded areas,
where streams can provide an opportunity to fish year round. Although
they possess fierce teeth and claws, bears are opportunistic and
omnivorous eaters, meaning they will dine on whatever is available
and convenient: trout, berries, insects, roots, and even garbage
left by human campers. Some species also hibernate during winter,
escaping into dens to sleep away the colder months.
